Obituary for Norman Stevenson

Norman Stevenson
It is with great sadness that the family of Norman Stevenson, known to friends as, ‘Norm”, passed away suddenly after a brief battle with liver cancer at the age of 93.

Norman was born in Manchester, CT, the son of Harry and Mary (Kelly) Stevenson. He moved to Ireland at the age of twelve where he continued his primary and secondary education. He went on to study carpentry at the Technical School at Portadown, then went on to an apprenticeship where he became a Master Carpenter.

Norman is a veteran of World War II and entered military service in 1943 from Northern Ireland, where he was assigned to Co. C 207th Engineer Combat Battalion. He served in the European theater of Operations and was in the campaigns at Normandy, Rhineland, and Central Europe. He was wounded in 1944 and was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and Defense Medal. He discharged with full honors in 1946 at Fort Devons, MA.

Norman returned from service and ran the cabinet shop at W.G. Glenney in Manchester and was later employed as the “Head of Maintenance” at The Steak Clubs until his retirement.

Norman was a longtime member and former pipe major with the 53rd Stewart Highlanders, which eventually became the Manchester Regional Police and Fire Band. Norman had great compassion for other disabled veterans and loved his country greatly. He was a very active member in the DAV and was a well-known and loved member of the community. Much to his family’s constant amazement, he did not go many places without being recognized.

For many years he attended The Assemblies of God church in East Hartford, where he was an usher for many years, and eventually made The Salvation Army Citadel his home church. Norman shared his woodworking skills and craft with many people along the way, offering to help them with various projects. He was a patient teacher, comical and quick-witted Irishman, and good friend to many. He spent many Saturday afternoons meeting friends at the mall food court to reminisce. More importantly, Norman was also the caretaker to his wife, Hannah, and selflessly gave of himself to meet her needs daily.

Norman was the glue that held his family together and he will be more than greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Hannah Stevenson, a daughter; Hallie Westcott, a son, Roger Stevenson; five grandchildren; Kylie, Casey, Sarah, Isabella and Heather and seven great-grandchildren; Emma, Elijah, Bennett, Abby, John, Carly and Chase. In lieu of sending flowers, please consider the needs of the family.
